Teaching Jobs: The Changing Market

By Sean Patrick

When the majority of people think of teaching jobs, most think of a grade-school teacher who is going through random lectures and boring chapters in text books. Although this was true at one time, in today’s world, teachers have much more exciting paths to choose from.

Traditional public schools continue to be the leading source of teaching jobs in the U.S. According to a 2008 study by the National Center for Education Statistics, between 1985 and 2008, public school enrollment rose 26 percent.

Charter school and magnet schools (two new types of class settings in the public school sector) have provided more choices for public educators in recent years.

In the yearly 1990′s, charter schools were first introduced. They receive tax dollars but are still considered public schools. They also receive additional funding from their group or groups of sponsors. Teachers are occasionally drawn to these schools because they are smaller and are privately run by the sponsor group.

In the late 1970′s, magnet schools were introduced to help bring together the public schools. These schools are now ultra-competitive, and very selective – although they still remain public. They often specialize in a unique area, for example language concentration or advanced technology.

In general, teachers find these magnet schools extremely attractive since their students tend to be enthusiastic, dedicated, and extremely goal-oriented kids.

Private schools account for a smaller segment of the teaching job market, but they are becoming increasingly influential. The term private schools covers a wide range of learning situations, from faith-based schools (such as the traditional Catholic parochial school) to military boarding schools.

Prayers are often included with private schools since they raise funds themselves – this is through the tuition prices of their students.

As one can see, there are plenty of different opportunities for education – therefore there are many different types of teaching jobs out there in the market today.
