Teaching Jobs: The Fluctuating Market In Today’s Economy

By

When most people envision a teaching job, they probably think of a second-grade teacher neatly writing letters on a blackboard at a public school. This may have been the norm at one time, but the truth is that today educators have a much broader range of teaching jobs from which to choose.

The leading source of teaching jobs here in the U.S. continues to be public schools – in fact, last year the NCES performed a study that showed growth in public school enrollment between 1986 and 2008 – to the tune of 26 percent.

Charter school and magnet schools (two new types of class settings in the public school sector) have provided more choices for public educators in recent years.

Charter schools have been around since the early 1990′s. Although considered public, they actually receive tax dollars as well as some additional monies from a group of sponsors. Teachers are attracted to these schools because most are a bit smaller and run exclusively by the sponsors.

Magnet schools were created in the late 1970s to help desegregate the public schools. Today they’ve evolved into highly competitive, highly selective public schools. Magnet schools often specialize in a specific area, such as technology or language immersion.

In general, teachers find these magnet schools extremely attractive since their students tend to be enthusiastic, dedicated, and extremely goal-oriented kids.

Although the private schools make up a smaller segment of the teaching job arena, they are actually becoming more and more influential as the days pass. Private schools can include anything from military schools (boarding and non-boarding) as well as the traditional Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, etc. academies (or faith-based schools).

Private schools can often include prayers since they raise their own funding.

As one can see, there are plenty of different opportunities for education – therefore there are many different types of teaching jobs out there in the market today.
