The Elementary Teacher

By

When you hear the word, “teacher,” you probably conjure up an image of the elementary teacher. And there’s a good reason for that. Elementary teachers make the strongest impressions upon what and how we learn since they teach us at a very vulnerable ages. From grades K – 12, the elementary teacher prepares his or her grade for the next, whether that grade is the 1st grade or a middle school grade.

You too, can make a strong impression upon this generation of kids by becoming an elementary teacher.

Here’s how.

Elementary Teaching Requirements

Outside of the private school, every elementary teacher must have at least a bachelor’s degree. The degree doesn’t necessarily have to be teaching-related, however. Those who have a bachelors in a non-teaching related career can compensate necessary skills with additional educational college courses – required for teacher certification.

They can also compensate an existing bachelors degree with student supervised teaching hours which is also required for licensure. Licensure is issued by the state and must be renewed every year.

Elementary Student Teacher Requirements

As an elementary teaching student, you’ll learn how to prepare lessons, issue and grade both tests and homework, and maintain a classroom while creating a safe learning environment. You may additionally learn how to tutor and operate a field trip. The specifics of what you’ll teach however, (and sometimes how you’ll teach it) depends on the grade you’ll teach, state requirements, and school district standards.

You’ll also learn how to educate varying learning styles, manage different personalities, and above all else, exercise diligent patience. Educating the young can be a trying experience, so patience isn’t a dismissive skill. Especially since some of the parents and administrators that teachers have to deal with can be just as trying. (Hey, we’re just being honest.)

Elementary Teacher Salaries

We can’t predict the exact amount you’ll earn as an elementary teacher since salaries depend on education, experience, location, and school type. The only thing we’re sure of is that there can never be too many good elementary teachers! As long as we have children, we’ll need teachers. So come on in and help us prepare them for the world.
